Reflective skills for managing grief in the perinatal and postpartum period

When an infant dies or when there is a pregnancy loss, we are faced with the family's feelings, as well as our own. This can be stressful, and using reflective skills can help. By reflection, we mean consideration of our own (and others’) mental states, including thoughts, emotions, wishes, and intentions. Our patient care (and self-care) improves when we can be mindful about how mental states arise, how they impact behavior, and how they interact within relationships. This training will provide helpful tools for reflecting on our own and others' mental states, as well as tips for how to embody a reflective and empathic stance with grieving families.

Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants should be able to:

  • Reflect on their own mental states as healthcare workers and what types of experiences or situations influence their emotions
  • Describe the impact that their mental states can have on the care they provide to patients and families
  • Reflect on the potential mental states that patients and families may have when a loved one is at end-of-life or has died
  • Embody a reflective stance characterized by collaboration, humility, transparency, and curiosity
