Healthcare organizations are environments where grief and loss are ever-present, affecting not only patients and families, but also the professionals and systems that care for them.
This webinar will explore the many ways grief and loss show up across healthcare organizations and what that means for administrators and other leaders. Drawing on more than 40 years of experience across healthcare settings, Chris Calkins, PhD, will examine the layers of loss within healthcare and practical ways leaders can strengthen workplace culture, practices, and policies to support healthcare professionals and foster more grief-sensitive care.
This event is presented in partnership by the Yale Child Study Center’s Grief-Sensitive Healthcare Project (GSHP) and the New York Life Foundation’s Grief-Sensitive Workplace Initiative (GSWI).

In this webinar, Dr. Julie Kaplow will explore how grief can manifest in children across developmental stages and how pediatricians and others working with children in primary care settings can recognize signs that may be overlooked or misinterpreted. Drawing from her extensive clinical, research, and policy leadership in childhood trauma and bereavement, Dr. Kaplow will share practical, grief-sensitive strategies for recognizing and responding to grieving children. The session will also highlight ways healthcare professionals can foster connection, communication, and continuity of care for children navigating loss.

Grief is part of nursing, but it doesn’t belong only to patients and families. Nurses may encounter loss repeatedly in their work while also carrying their own personal and professional grief. This webinar brings together Janice Whitaker, M.Ed., BSN, RN, CDP; Hui-Wen Sato, MSN, MPH, RN, CCRN; and Katherine Doebler, RN, BSN, CHPN, CGCP, who bring perspectives from across nursing disciplines, including geriatrics and long-term care, pediatric critical care, and hospice, palliative, and serious illness care.
Together, they will explore what grief literacy can look like in nursing, from recognizing and responding to grief in patient care to acknowledging the impact of loss on nurses themselves. The discussion will address professional grief, peer and workplace support, and practical ways to foster personal well-being and a culture where nurses have space to grieve, reflect, and care for themselves as well as others.
